A single RedLine C2 pivots into a maritime spear-phishing cluster and attacker-owned infrastructure.
An investigation beginning with a single RedLine Stealer C2 server from VMRay UniqueSignal evolved into uncovering a targeted Business Email Compromise campaign against South Korean maritime infrastructure. The analysis started with IP 194.156.79.122 on port 55615, leveraging fingerprinting techniques through FOFA and VirusTotal to identify additional C2 infrastructure. Pivoting through communicating files revealed spear-phishing emails targeting Kangrim Heavy Industries, a major South Korean marine boiler manufacturer. The campaign delivered Formbook malware through impersonated maritime supply chain companies. Further infrastructure analysis identified seven fraudulent domains hosted on TheHost LLC infrastructure, utilizing similar naming patterns and TLS certificates. The attack demonstrates sophisticated BEC tactics combining malware delivery with social engineering, mimicking legitimate business correspondence within the maritime shipping sector.

I had to take a brief detour to triage a surprising new class of SemVer breakage.
It's always *a time* when the net result is "8 issues across 5 repos" 😅
The net result is the same: even more lints!

It's been a while I refreshed my pinned #introduction toot, and I figured today will be a fitting day to write a new one.
Hi! Despite the avatar, I'm not a furry
, I'm a boring cishet white dude. Despite my privileged status, I might be considered a "terrorist"
in some weird jurisdictions, and some companies
will consider me a "malicious actor", because I built myself a crawler defense system that serves them an infinite maze of garbage. To them, I say: fuck you. I'm a Vengeful Mouse.
I also have the privilege of being able to admire the human body in all shapes and forms, even such "grotesque" things as a female presenting nipple (like this one:
, not to be confused with the
, an entirely different and totally not grotesque thing). I wish this was the norm, rather than a privilege.
I'm a serial drive-by contributor, I have my fingerprints all over the internet. I have code in #QMK, #Kaleidoscope, and #Chrysalis, but I contributed to #Forgejo, #niri, and a whole lot of other things too. I find great joy in playing with new things, and submitting patches or other contributions. I used to be a #Debian developer, I've put #Hy in production, and lately I've been building #NixOS configurations not only as a literate #OrgMode document, with with #OrgRoam. I am extremely normal and neurotypical.
Apart from these very normal things, I use #NixOS to boot into #Emacs, which is the real operating system I use, like a very sane, completely neurotypical person would. I also tend to live-toot (very verbosely) all kinds of shenanigans I'm up to, because I always forget I have a blog.
While I do wrangle code for a living in a variety of languages (in whatever language necessary, I'm a generalist! But if I can choose, I turn to #Rust, although #Lisp languages are also very dear to me), if it were up to me, I'd much prefer wrangling other kinds of words
than programming language symbols. Sadly, we're not living in a world that makes possible, so I had no choice but become a #luddite and so can you.
But I'm not all about tech
! I'm also Dad to wonderful Twins, and Husband to my Wife, who not only puts up with my crazy, but gently
fans the flames too. I may occassionally toot about #parenting, too.
I may or may not have an unhealthy addiction to footnotes
.
Nope, I'm not in denial stage, I do not work in infosec. ↩︎
I'm anti-fascist. ↩︎
Short stories like this toot, or The Tragedy of Byr (which might need an explanation to really understand what's going on). ↩︎
I wish I could leave tech, really. ↩︎
Where "gently" is either an eyeroll and more wood thrown onto the campfire, or straight up lighting up the neighbourhood, figuratively speaking. ↩︎

Second, the last required upstream PR got merged into rustdoc!
It lets us know which default values (like on associated consts, or default method impls in traits) are considered stable and therefore public API. This is the last "partial stability" mechanism we need.

RAT Abuses TON Blockchain to Target Japan's Hotel Industry
A sophisticated phishing campaign observed in May 2026 targets Japanese accommodation facilities partnering with Booking.com. Attackers impersonate guest complaints and review requests through emails, tricking hotel staff into downloading malicious ZIP files containing shortcut links disguised as photos. The malware, TONResolver, employs The Open Network blockchain platform as a dead drop resolver to dynamically retrieve command-and-control server addresses, making detection and takedown difficult. The attack uses Node.js with VM-based obfuscation and establishes encrypted WebSocket connections using ECDH key exchange and AES-256-CBC encryption. Two delivery methods were identified: bulk phishing and conversational attacks via Gmail that build trust before delivering malicious URLs. Once infected, endpoints maintain persistent Keepalive connections awaiting attacker commands for credential theft and additional malware deployment, with observed follow-on activity targeting browser-stored credentials from Ch...

I was going to continue working on a new website that I will be launching in the future, but time got away from me because I ended up starting to write a new crate in #rust to create #jsonfeeds

I actually pay for a medium subscription and still find some useful content there but got sick of lack of export so wrote a #rust scraper (after initial Python POC) https://github.com/mdfranz/med2md
