Day 177
#365project
+ #FotoVorschlag: #HeavyMetal

Spent most of the day taking care of something which involved driving 2 hours into England... Each way... In the heat... With no aircon... And the sun beating into the window. Unpleasant to say the least. And I didn't even have time to stop for pics. 😣 But on the way home, as we got further into Wales, the temperature cooled down probably 10°C (20°F) and good grief was that nice. Anyway, this is what I got for today. 🤷‍♀️

      Woah, check this!
I came across this easy mistake to miss in !
      Modern Rust is so tricky!
Luckily the Rust Geesechecker stopped me from pushing this to production and forgetting to value the Goose.
Here we can see on line 190 I clearly forgot to value the goose, which would have resulted in a catastrophic market segmentation fault!
Luckily the compiler knows that the true source of value is the Golden Egg factory inside the goose

It's Friday again, so it's time for another update on the work on Diesel, a ORM and query builder for Rust.

The news of the week is the release of mysqlclient-src 0.2.2, which improves an error message for incompatible platforms. See the release announcements for details: github.com/sgrif/mysqlclient-s

This week we received 6 new PR's, no new bug report, but three non-public "security" reports.

I'm very interested in systemic solutions to problems. Blaming an individual when they make a mistake *feels* reasonable. When a significant percentage of people make the same mistake (70%, 2%, it doesn't matter as long as it is measurable, predictable and has a negative impact), then it's *not* a persons fault.
We know how to tackle those kind of problems: we change the environment to minimize the likelihood of mistakes. Traffic and pedestrian safety is an example of a well explored space where we know what works. Bollards, narrower streets, slower speeds, raised pedestrian crossings, providing good alternatives to driving to reduce traffic...
Similar in industrial spaces: clear signaling, segregate heavy machinery from human limbs, clear and practiced process to get out of dodge when things go poorly...
It's always about looking for solutions to eliminate mistakes, and when they can't be eliminated, minimize the blast radius.
This is why I like : it's a language and tooling that applies the industrial approach of "if two people make this mistake, figure out how to mitigate it".
We can't "individual responsibility" our way out of systemic problems.
I want more software with bollards.

OpenAI is now a Platinum Sponsor of the Rust Foundation, after giving them $600,000. That allows OpenAI to place an OpenAI representative in the Board of Directors of the Rust Foundation.

OpenAI now (theoretically) has great influence over what Rust projects get funding and which don't. Of course the OpenAI representative assures us that he won't be partial to projects that benefit OpenAI and asks us to trust him in advance. He says he wants to direct funding to Rust projects where one dollar would have the highest impact, not necessarily to where it directly benefits OpenAI.

Remember that OpenAI recently bought Astral, the for-profit company that makes uv for Python. That is written in Rust.

OpenAI's agentic coding "assistant" Codex is also written in Rust. Wouldn't every AI bro argue that the highest impact per dollar is achieved by funding an "AI" agent that could then turn every junior developer into a 100x engineer?

My trust needs to be earned. A person could be my brother, and my trust in them would nonetheless vanish the moment he joins OpenAI. Trust is not something I hand out in advance, especially not to OpenAI employees.

The Rust Foundation made the same mistake of accepting dirty money as the Blender Foundation some weeks ago.

By allowing OpenAI into their Board of Directors, the Rust Foundation makes it clear that its members aren't deserving of my trust either.

Of course they also already accept other problematic corporations as sponsors.

Going into captive nuts which are blind enough that I can't get a wirebrush in there but not blind enough to be protected from road dirt. Aaaaaaaaargh!

I've blown air in to clear rthe worst of the dirt and then sprayed them in WD40/CRC. I will leave them overnight and hope they get the message.

Any tips on what else to try? I don't think I can effectively get heat in.

Also any tips on recovering if I snap them? They're 18mm head, M12 fine I think. Vertical under the sill of a Leaf.

These are all that stand between me and getting a tired 24kWh battery out of a Leaf and a fresh 40kWh one in.
