A table covered in a reddish patterned cloth stands in a dark room, lit only by a small window in the upper right corner. On the cloth sit three pale green scalloped bowls, a green enamel mug and a shallow green plate at the front, with two forks lying together at the right and the handle of a ladle resting in the left-hand bowl. The window has a brown-red frame and a thick, roughly plastered reveal that catches soft daylight; a green glazed jug with a chipped rim stands on its deep sill. Beyond the reveal the wall falls into near-black shadow, and the light on the tablecloth fades to dark toward the left edge. Colour photograph on 35mm film, with visible grain.

I have a that fires using scrap wood but I've never heard of a traditional wood fire kiln using scrap wood to fire. Typically, people either chop their own over the course of a year or buy cords of wood which can be very expensive. Josh DeWeese, a well-known ceramic artist, shows his wood fired kiln in this video that uses throwaway wood from local cabinet makers who are happy to give it to him rather than pay to dump it. ceramicartsnetwork.org/clayfli

There's a wonderful person named Tony Hansen who runs DigitalFire.com which is a massive, encyclopaedic storehouse of ceramics knowledge.

His work on glazes, specifically low temperature glazes, is amazing.

On the right tile is just his Cone 05+ Low Expansion Transparent glaze, on the right is my experiments with it - adding red stain, yellow stain, and red iron oxide with a little titanium dioxide for a beautiful rich Tomato Soup red with a bit of floating movement.

Two test tiles on a mosaic table. The one on the left has a clear glaze with the white clay showing through. The one on the right shows a shiny, deep tomato red glaze

So, I have learned something really monumental in terms of glaze. Both of these test tiles contain the very exact same glaze.

Both are on the same clay body. Both were fired to cone 04.

But the right one went through a much slower cooling cycle.

            And that is pretty amazing.

two test tiles on a mosaic table. The left one shows a dark bottle green, the right shows a much lighter, turquoise glaze with much more movement.

This one took me a very long time, because I don't use molds for the fingers, I make each one individually, I like that no two fingers will be exactly alike.

My partner found out today that will no longer be available. That due to the ongoing gypsum shortages in the supply chain, the manufacturer UGC is stopping producing it and only using the materials for other industries. As there was basically 1 supplier (UGC) that kills all plaster based mould making and small run production. I think it's broader impact than just the West Coast.
                        Anyone found another option?

                            hello!

i'm an agender, autistic, disabled and chronically ill ceramicist with little friends to sell and rent to pay!
                            (i'm also terrible at self-promotion :eariz_bun_peek:)

my shop is currently OPEN at driftingspirits.art and will remain open for the next week or so. after that, it'll be closed for some weeks while i try to rest/recover and work on autumn sculptures (autumn!). i'm still waiting for the decision on my disability claim so doing my best to keep going in the meantime.

i ship from france to a lot of places. that includes the US but not most of the EU now, sadly; please contact me for more info and/or see and rage about the EU's new PPWR legislation.

all orders will be shipped within three weeks of purchase. i can't stand up today, so i'll pack them when i can.

thank you for looking or buying or boosting if you can, and i wish you all a lovely day :Blobhaj_Heart_Rainbow:

I’ve been making bedside water bottles for years but I don’t make them very often. They’re inspired by Mexican botellones—small clay water jugs with an accompanying cup which serves as a cover. Sometimes the cup has a handle. I’ve also discovered a Congolese version of the botellón. It’s such a simple and effective idea that it’s no surprise it would appear in multiple cultures.

A spherical, decorative ceramic bottle with a small cup on top that acts as a cover when not in use. The piece features a textured off-white surface, aqua accents, and intricate geometric patterns. The background is a plain brown color.
