Trying to keep my mind off the abysmal state of the world with a couple of challenges.

The first is to create a glaze that resembles fresh black olives. Black, with a purplish undertone, and a patchy film of dusty white.

            I got my lamps back from the shop. This is such a fun, satisfying collaboration. 💡

                You guys have been so patient with me on my glaze journey. I had a real success today, with no caveats.
                I pretty much formulated this glaze from scratch - although I had a glaze recipe from Linda Bloomfield as a starting point. But I achieved two important goals for me: a visually interesting low temperature glaze for eathenware, and using only materials easily obtained in Europe - indeed, all produced by Prodesco in Spain.

                  I often look to traditional Nigerian pottery forms for inspiration. The pot on the left is a vessel from the Nupe tribe. I’ve read as extensively as I can about how they may have been used by it never makes sense to me. First of all, the pots are quite large, no less than 40 inches in circumference, so very heavy to pour from—and the narrow neck makes pouring even more difficult. I address this by making mine a smaller handheld size with a spout.

                          An update on my fucking around with transparent commercial powdered glazes.

                          I'm pretty pleased with a few that I've developed. Specifically this one, which I wanted to use as a liner glaze instead of the usual toiletbowl white.

                                  I'm a tad sad today. I have resorted to using powdered commercial glazes - enhanced with a combination of oxides - to finish a project I have waiting to be glazed.

                                  I just didn't feel sure about the food safeness of the clear glaze I formulated. I did some acid and temperature shock testing, and my glazes didn't pass to my satisfaction.

                                  I won't give up in my quest to make them from scratch myself. But I wouldn't want to endanger anyone's health.

                                      After working with Zulu potter, Jabulile Nala from South Africa, I began to wonder why has become an expensive hobby requiring extensive tools and equipment when originally, it was just earth and fire which are free. I created this workshop series for those who are interested in clay but find the cost of classes prohibitive. I offered it at a sliding scale but now it's available for free. Enjoy!

                                        I’ve been making bedside water bottles for years but I don’t make them very often. They’re inspired by Mexican botellones—small clay water jugs with an accompanying cup which serves as a cover. Sometimes the cup has a handle. I’ve also discovered a Congolese version of the botellón. It’s such a simple and effective idea that it’s no surprise it would appear in multiple cultures.
