Am 16. Juli leite ich nochmal den Workshop „Das Fediverse – ein selbstbestimmter Raum im Internet“ im KuRSiF.

Veranstaltungstext:
Die US-Amerikanischen Tech-Größen versammeln sich hinter Donald Trump und die sogenannten „Sozialen Netzwerke“ wie Instagram, Twitter/X oder Facebook ziehen mit. Das bedeutet konkret Einschränkungen in der Moderation und dem Fact Checking. Damit werden Desinformationen und Fake News die Tore geöffnet und der politische Diskurs droht weiter zu verrohen und in Populismus überzugehen.

Was es mit dem Fediverse auf sich hat und welche Rolle Mastodon darin spielt, soll in diesem Workshop erklärt und erfahren werden.

Has anyone already developed something like a '15 day plan' to try the Fediverse, specifically targeted at helping communities/interest groups give it a go via a series of quick and easy steps?

I'm thinking something like this to help facilitate the beginnings of a migration:

Day 1: Browse the home feeds of these three servers suited to our shared interest(s).

Day 2: Choose one of those servers and register an account.

Day 3: Follow at least ten other accounts; here are 25 suggestions.

Day 4: Browse your new home feed.

Day 5: Browse your live feed (own server).

Day 6: Like a post.

Day 7: Boost a post.

Day 8: Reply to a post.

Day 9: Write an #Introduction post.

Etc etc.

More bitching about (American?) lefties: Some people work really hard to eliminate binaries when talking about gender and attraction, but bake it into many other things. Every post that says things about "Americans", "Republicans", "White people", "Men", "Children", etc. assumes a binary: If you're in this group (by the definition of the writer), then you share all of the characteristics the writer attributes to the group. I get the desire for a punchy, uncomplicated hot take (and I have been guilty of this), but it's not valid or true. Americans aren't remotely one thing, ever; we're a bunch of cats, dogs, lizards, hamsters, doorknobs, and squids shoved in the same bag. White people, men, women, children, autistic people, etc.: Similar situation: There is a lot of diversity. In many domains there is more diversity of whatever-you're-talking-about within the group than between that and other contrasting groups. Even Republicans (as much as I hate to admit it) are not the same; they're a bit of a different situation because conformity (i.e., "unity") via authoritarianism is valued so strongly in conservative groups that diversity of thoughts, attitudes, etc. is suppressed and then not displayed, but there are still differences (OK, I regularly say "Republicans" as a global stereotype on FB, trying to punch through the noise of blandness... I'm guilty of this).

Comments like "The constitution was [description]" or "America is basically..." etc. do the same thing: they attribute one set of characteristics to something that is inherently not one thing. No matter what your hot take is about the Constitution or immigration law or the US justice system, you're wrong unless you fold in the fact that these are multidimensional mishmashes of the intentions and actions of many different people and groups.

Most of us have generous character limits here on the #fediverse, and I think many of us pride ourselves on at least trying to do critical thinking and careful analysis of complex things. There is no exception for things "everyone agrees" are "merely [whatever]".

@edgeofeurope Rob, I’m not arguing for prudery, nor treating all nudity as pornography. Non-pornographic art, medical information, and education are obvious examples where nudity can be legitimate.

I’m specifically arguing that Mastodon-branded generalist instances should not host pornography. I am also talking about preventing pornography from reaching people who did not deliberately opt into it by joining, following, or browsing adult-oriented servers and accounts.

A free society can defend sexual freedom while still expecting explicit adult-only content to be properly contained.

Mir ist aufgefallen, dass viele Hashtags ganz unterschiedlich nutzen. Manche verzichten komplett darauf, andere hängen unter jeden Beitrag 20 oder 30 Hashtags. Deshalb heute ein kleiner Blick hinter die Kulissen. 😊

Ein Hashtag ist nicht nur ein farbiges Wort mit einer Raute davor. Er ist gleichzeitig ein Thema, unter dem Beiträge gesammelt werden. Viele Menschen folgen bestimmten Hashtags, um genau die Inhalte zu sehen, die sie interessieren.

Jeder zusätzliche Hashtag bedeutet aber auch:
🔹 Dein Beitrag wird in einem weiteren Themenbereich eingeordnet.
🔹 Er wird auf vielen Instanzen zusätzlich indexiert und verarbeitet.
🔹 Menschen finden deinen Beitrag möglicherweise über diesen Hashtag.

Mehr Hashtags bedeuten deshalb nicht automatisch mehr Reichweite. Im Gegenteil:
Zu viele Hashtags wirken oft unübersichtlich und erschweren den Lesefluss. Außerdem verlieren die wirklich wichtigen Themen zwischen vielen weniger passenden Schlagwörtern an Aufmerksamkeit.Manche Menschen empfinden Beiträge mit sehr vielen Hashtags als unübersichtlich oder stumm schalten solche Inhalte sogar. Wenige, gut gewählte Hashtags helfen oft mehr als eine lange Liste.

Für die meisten Beiträge reichen 3 bis 6 gut gewählte Hashtags völlig aus. Entscheidend ist nicht die Anzahl, sondern dass sie wirklich zum Inhalt passen.

Ein Beispiel:

Mehr ist in vielen Fällen gar nicht nötig.

The numbers behind the previous post, for the curious.

Same fio and sysbench setup on both boxes, Debian 13, direct=1, libaio.

Random read 4K, the workload databases actually live on:
1.41M IOPS on the 2025 box against 822k on the 2027 one.

RAM bandwidth: 64,038 MiB/s against 11,906. That is 5.4x.

Single thread CPU: 4,504 against 4,147 events/sec. Same EPYC Genoa on paper.

And here is my favorite part. The old box ran all of this while carrying my entire production: Mastodon, Postgres, Valkey, a pile of Docker containers, 17 days of uptime.

The new box was empty and idle.

The loaded veteran still won almost everything.

Sometimes newer is not better. At least not for the things that matter to you.

I benchmarked two OVH VPS in the same Zurich location. My current 2025 model with a 500 Mbit network against the newer 2027 model with 1 Gbit. Same AMD EPYC Genoa cores, same provider, nearly identical sysbench CPU scores.

Then the surprises started.
The older box pushes 6,612 MiB/s in memory tests, the newer one 932 MiB/s. That is 7x.
Random 4K reads: 1.32 million IOPS against 832k.
And the old model is even about 1 EUR cheaper.

For a Mastodon instance, databases, and Docker workloads, memory and disk beat extra bandwidth every time. So the shiny new VPS gets demoted to reverse proxy and backup duty, and this instance stays exactly where it is.

Benchmark before you migrate.

Hi guys! 🙂 I’m moving this conversation away from Burnout Café’s @admin account and over to my personal account. The admin account is meant mainly for administration, moderation, and service information.

It was me who wrote the posts about #pornography, #moderation, #mastodon, and the #fediverse.

I stand by my policy arguments, but I accept that one phrase was badly chosen. I should have referred to pornography generally, not homosexual pornography specifically.

I am not saying that gay people or gay sexual content uniquely endanger anyone. That is not what I believe.

My view is that Mastodon-branded generalist instances such as mastodon.social, mastodon.online and mastodon.world should not host pornography, regardless of orientation, and should do more to prevent unexpected exposure to pornographic material federated from elsewhere.

Content warnings and hashtags frequently are not being used, notably when posts are federated from other instances where they don't apply the same rules as mastodon.social and mastodon.online.

So pornography without any obfuscation can reach people - including minors - who did not knowingly opt into adult content.

Pornography can be hosted on other servers in the Fediverse, but I don't believe it should be on servers that are operated by the Mastodon project, or that are likely to be perceived by newcomers as Mastodon-branded entry points.

Burnout Café’s server rules show the kind of lower-shock, non-pornographic general space I am trying to maintain.

I support LGBT+ people living openly, safely, and equally.

My argument is about pornography policy on major Mastodon entry-point instances, not about opposing LGBT+ rights or expression.

People are free to disagree with me. I am also free to argue for stricter moderation.

I am happy to discuss the actual policy issues: consent, containment, age-safety, public timelines, federation, and the role of Mastodon-branded generalist instances.

I am not interested in turning the debate into a trial of motives.

The owner of the apartment I rent already started harassing me yesterday; she always does that whenever I'm late paying the bills, maintenance fee, and yearly rent. So at least $350 is needed before the 16th before she comes banging on my door with building security to harass me again.
At the same time, I honestly can't put off my meds and my actual needs to have proper, healthy food from the groceries portion of the basic monthly essentials anymore after surviving with scraps without meds for the past six months, I really need them.

So idk, between dying from hunger and being unmedicated, and potentially being homeless after being harassed, I'd rather be alive while I'm homeless. So $468 (for meds and groceries) it is 👍🏻
