I really don't get this. What's the scam? These bots keep registering for accounts on my instance. They register, I approve them on the off chance they're actual people, and then get this... They never ever log in again. Don't log in again, don't do anything. Nothing. Maybe they're spam bots designed to register an account and then immediately spam the fediverse, and they're not coded well enough to deal with an approval step? Perhaps that's it?

I don't get what the angle is here.

Hello everyone, I’m a 36-year-old honorably discharged U.S. Navy veteran living in Charlotte, North Carolina. BizzFed ist heute ein funktionierendes föderiertes Berufsnetzwerk. Für die nächste große Version habe ich ein Konzept entworfen und möchte es mit euch diskutieren, bevor ich anfange zu bauen.

Die Leitidee: ein offenes Berufsnetzwerk mit überprüfbarem Vertrauen. Dezentral, ohne Algorithmus, ohne Tracking, aber mit Belegen, die du überallhin mitnehmen kannst.

Drei Säulen:
🪪 Verifizierte Berufsidentität. Arbeitgeber, Hochschulen und Verbände bestätigen Stationen, Abschlüsse und Zertifikate per Signatur. Du stimmst zu, die Bestätigung ist auf jeder Instanz prüfbar und zieht beim Instanzwechsel mit um.
💼 Jobs mit echter Reichweite. Stellen aus offenen Quellen, föderiert veröffentlicht, Bewerbung ohne Account.
🌍 Instanzen für Gemeinschaften. Eigene Instanz für Branche, Region, Hochschule oder Verband.

Zum Beispiel der Account von "Verrückte Geschichte". Weg, als ob er nie hier gewesen war.

Da mich die Designarbeiten an der kommenden Mastodon-Version 8.5 nicht wirklich überzeugen, ich möchte fast sagen abschrecken, teste ich zurzeit Misseky und den Clone Sharkey.

Es gibt aus meiner Sicht viele Vorteile, wie zum Beispiel das Nutzen des gesamten (!) Monitorbereichs und die vielen Einstellungsmöglichkeiten, sodass ich das Aussehen und viele Funktionen genau nach meinen Wünschen anpassen konnte.

Leider gibt es aber auch einen Nachteil:

Ich habe es bisher nicht geschafft, die Benachrichtigungen auf meinem Pixel 7 Pro durchgehend zu erhalten. Ich werde aber weiter nach einer Lösung suchen und dieses Wochenende weitertesten. 😀

I think the name is quite funny - the 8th layer of the ISO/OSI model. 🤓😉 ...it's tech, it's a joke, it's supposed to be fun, afaik.

I'm asking, because recently, someone boosted a toot from several years ago - "something... of course a layer8.space user ...something".

Am i getting lumped-in with slightly differently weird dickheads on the internet? 😉🤣

Visitors come from all over the world, not from a single region. The app is published in 223 countries and territories, and the map in the screenshot reflects that.

One detail I find interesting: our app was removed from the Chinese App Store, yet we still see steady growth in users from China. Most likely this is because the app is also available on Android marketplaces and supports Linux devices. When you don’t depend on a single distribution channel, one removal doesn’t cut you off from an entire country.

This is also why we build on open protocols and keep the platform available on as many systems as possible: Web, iOS, Android and Linux.

For founders and investors this matters more than it might seem. A project published on the platform is visible to an international audience of entrepreneurs, investors and analysts, not just a local circle.

What if next year's #FediDay became a Democratic Social Media Day?

We need fewer conversations exclusively among Fediverse enthusiasts, and more conversations among people who care about democracy and are actively seeking alternatives to Big Tech social media.

Let's bring together journalists, politicians, civil society organizations, researchers, and grassroots activists.

And let's bring more diversity to the stage: immigrants, Black communities, people from the Global South, and minority groups who are already using the internet to organize, mobilize, and make their voices heard.

Not everyone is on the Fediverse. Some are exploring other alternatives. Others are politically active on Big Tech platforms because that's where their communities are. Let's invite them too, listen to their experiences, and understand their needs.

We need to move beyond discussing alternative platforms and start treating political communication as democratic public infrastructure.

This should be a European-level effort, bringing together EU institutions, governments, civil society, and diverse communities.

The Fediverse should be part of that conversation, but the conversation needs to be much bigger than the Fediverse.
