Most social networks live inside a single company's servers. One owner, one
policy, one point of failure. Decentralization changes that.

Instead of one central platform, the network is made of many independent
servers — called instances — that talk to each other using open protocols
like ActivityPub. You pick your server, keep your identity, and can still
follow and interact with people on other servers. It's like email: you use

Because of the Social Media Platforms (Ofcom Licensing) Bill in the uk, fediverse admins globally now have to get a license to be able to be connectable from the uk.

Edit: I forgot to add that this hasn't passed yet, but it probably will because politicians don't listen to us here

Please not that it says operating in the uk not operating from the uk, so it applies globally.

To get a license:
- You have to send snail mail to ofcom to get a license
- Employ a compliance team
- Keep all your logs
- Ensure that content made available does not
"incite criminal conduct, violence, hatred or public disorder." Whatever the fuck that means, it's so vague you can make that anything
- Ensure that content made available does not violate the laws of the uk... So you have to follow uk law outside of the uk now
- Ensure that there isn't misinformation, so I would just not have to post misinformation on my lemmy instance then? Or is that not enough for them? I can't remove stuff on other instances you fucking morons
- You have to dox all your users

The punishment for breaking any of these rules is as follows:
- An unlimited fine
- Up to two years of jail time
- A court order to have ISPs block you(fucking horrible my lemmy instance is in my wardrobe I don't want my internet cut off)
- And anything else the court " considers appropriate." Which is anything so just anything else

I need to put this long post I made on #meta here, because it is on independent media like the #Fediverse where I learned about those who were too strongly principled to vote in the 2024 US election, and why. In my rage at the election result, I was not nice to them. My apologies would fall on deaf ears if it were not posted here. I won't post the responses I got on FB as my continued "rebuttals" should basically explain what was said to me. Suffice it to say, it was NASTY. I was accused of many hateful things, simply for stating something that wasn't within somebody else's ideological viewpoint. This was my post:

Real story here, she ran as the "Top Cop" and running mate to "Genocide Joe". Americans wanted somebody unlike a Republican, not a lighter form of one! Democrats, like Liberals, think they can keep winning as Conservative-lite.

I still believe Bernie Sanders could have prevented the US from decending into chaos, had the party kept him instead of instilling "Genocide Joe" as the option.

Canada, our day of reckoning is coming too. Mark Carney is tearing up worker rights and environmental protections, and pushing through austerity budgets for the benefit of the wealthiest few.

But our country is not QUITE as two-party as the US. The NDP leadership race ovwewhelmingly REJECTED the idea of staying "Liberal-lite", and voted to forge a new path for the 99%.

(Edit to add the history for those who don't know it: Trump did not gain any votes in 2024, he lost votes from 2020. The USA didn't suddenly become more racist. What changed is that the Democrats lost over 6 million votes. Meanwhile, Democrats openly stated that they BOYCOTTED the election because, in their words, they could not in good conscious vote for Joe Biden or his administration because of genocidal policies. This was PLANNED. They obviously aren't voting for Trump, so they didn't vote at all. Polls showed that Democrats, both voters and Elected Representatives were strongly, by at least 85%, against the genocide that the Administration was supporting. In short, it was the ADMINISTRATION which Harris was a part of that got boycotted. This was NOT PERSONAL to her, and applied to Joe Biden even more than her. It was NOT sexist.

"Genocide Joe" was the nickname dubbed by these voters. "Top Cop" was the nickname that Kamala Harris took on HERSELF, through her own campaign. These are not my personal opinions, they are documented history.)

I also need to point out that I heard more about the voting boycott AFTER the vote than before it. That means that people were so strong in their moral convictions that they were willing to stand up and take the blame for Donald Trump, just to send a message that they will not accept the "second best" genocider. I don't think people who can simply ignore tens of thousands of children being murdered can understand such conviction. This is why I softened my feeling about what happened over time, and started to sympathize with them. We need to stand firm in solidarity, I'm learning this.

So let's TALK about what really happened here, because those 6 million voters (okay, maybe some had voter apathy and weren't taking a stand, but we'll say 6 million to keep it simple) put the country at great risk for one reason only: It was the only way they saw to end a continual downward spiral which would take both parties down with it. So people can know that we need REAL OPTIONS, NOT BONES. If you say that genocide support had nothing to do with what happened in the 2024 election, you are killing that voice, and supporting the status quo to continue dragging both parties to the right. In Canada, we are privileged because we can learn from this lesson, see how close we've come to it ourselves, without actually having to live through the worst case scenario (Trump or Poilievre in power). PLEASE do not let that lesson go to waste.

EDIT: I did not want this to be a long post, but some people have strong opinions that "people are just awful, so of course racism and misogyny is the answer" and can't separate the facts from opinions. So let's flesh this out, with verifiable fact as the foundation:

First, we need to understand that those who would not vote for Harris were DEMOCRAT voters, not Republican voters. The numbers show a shortfall of well over 6 million voters from the 2020 elections, and both Republicans and Democrats took a loss from the low voter turnout, but the Republicans barely lost any votes while the Democrats lost massively.

Those who wouldn't vote for Kamala Harris were not voting for Trump. They just weren't voting. That part we know as a fact. Where the opinions come in is in their reason for not voting.

Now everything I added in paranthesis is "fact-based". It's all observed history and opinions spoken by those involved at the time. Nobody interviewed 6 million voters and asked why did they not vote for Kamala Harris, though those who claim it was racism and misogyny seem to speak as if this survey was conducted. However, we DID have a large number of people who spoke out about their reasons and convictions, before and after the vote. This took tremendous courage to do so after the vote, as they were admitting to allowing Trump to win, and they were shamed and outcast for it. Nonetheless, they still spoke out because their convictions that they "could not in good conscience vote for another genocide-enabler" was much stronger than the shame and consequences. These are the facts.

So the opinions now are divided on two sides: Those who believe the voices of those who spoke out about their moral convicitions and principles, against those who believe that Democrats (not Republicans) are racists and misogynists, and there can be no other reason.

Looking at those facts, the answer is clear to me. However, that does not mean there couldn't be more evidence that hasn't been seen. Is there actually evidence of Democrats saying that "I can't vote for a Black woman"? Besides "we all know"? None that I have seen. However, there are many Democrats who DID, ON RECORD, state that "I cannot in good conscience vote for another genocide-enabler" or that "I did not show up to vote because... (same as above)". Many bravely spoke out to that effect. So from where I stand, there is only evidence for the one opinion, and only ideology to back the other. I choose an evidence-based informed opinion, and reject an opinion based on ideological stance.

If you have EVIDENCE to show that it was indeed misogyny and racism that made Kamala Harris lose the 2024 election and caused 6 million DEMOCRAT voters to not show up, then by all means share it. Until then, I stand with the position backed by facts and evidence, and will not condone personal attacks based on an ideological position.

I also have one last thing to add.... I AM SORRY! To those I was involved in shaming for their part in letting Trump win, I APOLOGIZE! I see your solidarity now. I understand it now. I have grown.

Seeing how vehemently people are trying to twist what you did, makes me realize its importance.

For a while back there I thought the best way to grow the #Fediverse was to get a few "celebrities" with 10 Million followers to join, and we could grow that way, but that's obviously a bad idea in hindsight.
We need to get 10 Million small communities, special niche interests, unique hobbies, philosophies, fan clubs to join us here.
If the nice celebrities want to join that's fine too.

They have their search options enabled but more locked down on that server. Interesting. I hadn't seen that setting yet.

There are issues. If a server doesn't enable their search options, it's less available remotely.

I'm down this rabbit hole a bit since last week, part of why I started this account.

It's working better than previously experienced between say here and beige because both instances have enabled search options.

But, some things like searching other people's stuff or other servers is not as functional necessarily.

It wants to be useful for searching from your own account your posts, etc. It's user centric more or less in that way.

Honestly, I only utilized it a little bit earlier but found one of my dumb things on beige as a test and it worked well. Just had to phrase the search correctly.

I'm an old non tech guy so I hope some of this makes sense.

I also think it seems like search is improving with servers that are realizing they should update more.
