Maybe someone with more snac / fedi experience can help me out with this:
Often I'll have a post in my timeline because someone I follow replied to it. I'll see the original post and the reply by the person I follow. When I visit the original post at its instance website, I'll notice it has more replies by other people that don't show in my snac UI, presumably because my instance didn't have them.

I noticed there's a command "collect_replies" and it sounds like this would get the replies so they show up... but it doesn't seem to do anything?

I wonder if I'm misunderstanding how fedi works or what that command does. Can one instance A ask another instance B "give me all replies to that post!" even when the replies are from even other instances C, D, E etc.?

    If you would permit me to share: i'm currently working on a light forge called Frogue: https://frogue.vit.am/~ololduck/Frogue

    Regarding your point about ForgeFed, i think we need real implementations active in the world in order to improve . To my knowledge, https://frogue.vit.am is the only "working" (tests pass, two instances successfully communicate with each other) ForgeFed forge online. If you know of any other i would love to be made aware of it.

    There's a irc channel with 22 silent users in it.

    Frogue is also an server, so if you want news about it you can subscribe to @ololduck@frogue.vit.am

    Sorry for butting in, i realize that this message does give the impression of tooting my own horn, but that is not the case. What i'm trying to convey is that as a ForgeFed dev/user, i'm feeling quite a lack of interest in bringing the spec to life.

      Wird mal wieder Zeit für dieses Schaubild. :-)

      Infografik mit dem Titel »A view into the Fediverse - Who talks to whom - and how?«.

                      Here's a conceptual programming question for you:

                      If I have a static site generator, can I make it federated..? :anime_huh:

                      I mean, I think you can set up an RSS feed so that the feed is updated when the site is updated.

                      Could that be federated? Tied to a federated platform to handle the dynamic aspects, maybe..?

                      I ask, because when people were asking about better "web comic" platforms, some of the stuff they asked for were my reason for making "LunaGen" for my landing site for serial episode content.

                      Could it be federated? Does that even make sense? Would I lose the benefits of a static website? 🤔 :raccoon_cool:

                            Let's take a moment to explore the concept of my block list.

                            "Billy Bob" is like:

                            > "I like child porn and share photos and videos of child porn."

                            So naturally, Billy Bob ends up on the block list. But along comes "Mary Sue," and she is like:

                            > "I support Billy Bob, and I am going to like, share, and boost Billy Bob's post."

                            So naturally, Mary Sue ends up on the block list. Then along comes "John Doe," and he is like:

                            > "It is completely unfair of you to add Mary Sue to your block list! Mary Sue is not Billy Bob — and so what if she is liking, sharing, and boosting Billy Bob's child porn post? I do not believe anyone should use your block list, and I insist that people should block you instead."

                            A wise person sees the problem and knows why all of these people are now on the block list, and why anyone who claims the block list is unfair should also be on the block list. No one should be defending child porn, nor the individuals who like, share, and boost child porn posts, nor should they come to the defense of such individuals while denouncing both the block list and its creator.

                            I am applying this exact same logic to spammers and scammers. It is not a hard concept to understand, and it is not unfair either — unless you are pro-spammer and pro-scammer.

                            (Speaking personally, I see scammers as just as bad as pedophiles, because they too often prey upon the weak, vulnerable, and defenseless. Scammers are known to target the young, the elderly, and the disabled.)

                                Btw, I am keeping a list for myself on projects that enter the fediverse that use AI and/or are proprietary. I see these as risk factors to trigger unwanted corporate interest when they demonstrate there's open market space in the new niches they are exploring. And able to do that very quickly with LLM help, or more smartly (than the average FOSS project) with an enterpreneurial mindset.

                                And the weird thing is.. there is another Harmony project with a similar but different codebase and different website. And this one has support. It is also AI-coded (project was at v1.2 when the repo was only 2 weeks old, with a huge codebase):

                                              I'm reading through some of my post/repost/reply history to find something I thought I'd linked to a while ago.

                                              I've noticed a couple replies seem to have lost the thread they replied to. Is that a bug with today's 5.0 update?

                                              If I could "view source" on a post to see the underlying event, I might be able to find the thread myself, but I guess the UI doesn't provide that? Anyone remember the API to fetch that? 🤔

                                                We're on Mastodon 5 - Nightly. 🤯

                                                I am going to assume there will be no Mastodon 4.9.x. We also skipped 4.8.x which was previously nightly, and was never released to the current branch.

                                                That means once 5.0 is released things will be as follows:

                                                Mastodon Nightly: 5.x.x
                                                Mastodon Current: 5.0.x
                                                Mastodon Stable: 4.7.x
                                                Mastodon Legacy: 4.6.x

                                                This seems to track since Mastodon themselves advised people who were using older versions to 4.6.x minimum.

                                                      Has "Mastodon" become a category name, rather than a product / brand name? In a similar way "Jeep" became a category word for "all-terrain vehicle".

                                                      So often I see people use , where they refer more broadly to . And I think "How about all the other fine apps other than Mastodon?"

                                                        I don't know how to get the eyes or ears of any big movers or shakers, but if someone out there who is good with code wants to jump on a golden opportunity, one is presenting itself.

                                                        A couple of days ago, Tapas warned all their creators that they were going to be shutting down. If you're not familiar with it, Tapas is a webcomics platform, and basically the only decent-sized alternative to Webtoon.

                                                        If we could throw together some sort of ActivityPub-backed Webcomics platform, we could use it as a way to get a lot more people using Fediverse-adjacent technology.

                                                        I don't have the time or energy to do any of this myself, and I am not good at coding, but I have been doing webcomics since the 1990s, and have watched the rise and fall of Keenspot, Drunk Duck, Wordpress and the RSS era, and now the modern "Walmart for Webcomics" era. This is a huge opportunity to present the Fediverse as a viable alternative.

                                                            I've just published version 2.96 of , the simple, minimalistic instance server written in C. It includes the following changes:

                                                            Accounts can be marked as cool; anytime a cool account posts something, a notification will be sent.

                                                            Fixed an issue in Direct Messages sent from the people page; these posts didn't explicitly mention the recipient, and that confused some implementations.

                                                            Fixed crash when sending an empty EmojiReact.

                                                            HTTP requests can now be forced to use IPv6 by setting the force_ipv6_requests configuration directive to true in server.json.

                                                            Fixed a socket buffering issue under OpenIndiana (contributed by aleteoryx).

                                                            Mastodon API: Added missing requested_by field in the relationships entrypoint (contributed by Uilebheist), implemented the followers entrypoint (contributed by Uilebheist), use Mastodon's RFC3339 format for markers (contributed by nowster), fixed posts with muted words not being filtered out, fixed editing of media alt texts.

                                                            Tweaked HTML to avoid elinks complaining about a missing '' fragment.

                                                            Fixed a bug that made deleting the notification email address impossible.

                                                            RSS timelines are now cached because fuckers hammer for them continuously (probably AI crap bots).

                                                            Added information to README.md on how to build and install on Illumos / OpenIndiana Hipster 2026.04 (contributed by aleteoryx).

                                                            Updated Russian, Brazilian Portuguese and Czech translations (contributed by koru, daltux, pmjv).

                                                                        On lsbt.me, we first saw a flood of API registrations using Python/aiohttp. The telltale signs were usernames following the pattern bp plus 16 hex characters, and the sign-up reason was always "Automated protocol deliverability probe". A narrow block on that user agent stopped the first wave.

                                                                        Today, however, five new registrations came in with the same usernames and the same sign-up reason. This time the bot simply identified itself as Chrome 126. That's exactly why a user agent is only useful as a short-term filter. It's a header the client can set to anything.

                                                                        The requests go to POST /api/v1/accounts. This endpoint lets client apps create a new local account directly in the app. No app needs it for OAuth connections to existing accounts. doesn't use it either. It registers itself via /api/v1/apps, obtains consent via /oauth/authorize, and then works with a user token. Regular sign-up through the Mastodon website is also handled separately via POST /auth.

                                                                        So I've completely disabled API account creation on lsbt.me. Web sign-up, OAuth, and existing clients keep working as before. Anyone who wants a new account just signs up once on the web as usual and can then use any client.

                                                                        If you'd also rather not offer this optional native sign-up path, you can add the following to your Nginx server block, before the general location / block. The example assumes the @proxy location that many Mastodon Nginx configs already include:

                                                                        location = /api/v1/accounts {
                                                                        limit_except GET {
                                                                        deny all;
                                                                        }

                                                                        try_files $uri @proxy;
                                                                        }

                                                                        This returns a 403 only for POST /api/v1/accounts. The read-only GET endpoint remains reachable. As always, run nginx -t afterwards and only reload once the test passes.

                                                                          [?]AndiS 🌞🍷🇪🇺 » 🌐

This is an important release, as it fixes an issue that can lead to denial of service attacks, so please update as soon as possible. It also includes the following changes:

                                                                                Fixed a bug in the notification page that made snac hang forever while trying to read abnormally big files.

                                                                                Improved support for text-only web browsers: it's now possible to configure a set of web browser user-agent strings that will receive simpler HTML in the private timeline web UI. Basically, it consists in avoiding details / summary HTML tags as much as possible.

                                                                                Added some fixes to media proxy code.

                                                                                Fixed EmojiReact code to allow any emoticon defined in emojis.json, not only those with colon-wrapped identifiers.

                                                                                Fixed a bug in notification filtering (paging was sometimes incorrect).

                                                                                Added a notification filter for Webmentions.

                                                                                Mastodon API: Don't return reactions count as string (contributed by mkljczk), implemented GET /v1/media (contributed by clairemont).
