Happy birthday, #Debian! #linux #gnu
AodeRelay boosted#Debian feiert heute seinen 33. Geburtstag. Am 16. August 1993 kündigte der damalige Purdue-Student Ian Murdock an, eine neue Linux-Distribution entwickeln zu wollen. Niemand ahnte damals, dass Debian zum Fundament des modernen Internets heranwachsen würde.

Your daily reminder that Linus Torvalds is a fucking sellout and he's allowing major asshole AI corpos like OpenAI, Anthropic, and even fucking Palnitir, amongst others, to poison the well.
The Linux kernel needs to be hard forked RIGHT FUCKING NOW by the community and locked away from Linus and his cronies. I no longer consider Linus to be reliable to keep it going. Let a distro like #Debian take it over and keep it running for the community.
🗳️ Debian Opens Vote on the Future of AI-Assisted Contributions
「 Voting began on August 15 and will stay open until August 28. Only Debian Developers can vote, using Debian’s ranked voting system to list their preferences among the options 」

@secbox @debian @kde I’m not on #debian stable, or even #devuan stable, which is my preferred go to for a Debian environment, but I’m running #kde right now on my new #framework laptop, and it is definitely nice.
Definitely a different experience from #gnome because they changed drastically from version 2 to 3 and beyond, whereas KDE doesn’t feel that different from where it was in KDE 3.
Linux microblog update: I wanted a voice chat server for gaming, so I logged into my Freedom box and pushed a button in the web interface.
Now to deal with CGNAT so I can reach it from anywhere...
Wondering which other #Linux distros have already voted to ban slopcode besides #Gentoo. https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Project:Council/AI_policy
Sounds like #Debian is in the middle of voting on the subject and we won't know which way they swing til near end of the month.
#ArchLinux still has no policy that I can find, though the continued attacks on the AUR are making me consider leaving anyways (or at the least, reevaluate how much of a package-building freeloader I intend to be).
#Fedora, not that I really like RPM-based distros much anyways (personal preference! that family tree does lots of good work, just not my thing for hobby shit) seems to have an explicit-allow policy.
Bets on whether someone else already has a page up with a table on this subject? 😅
Prior to the battery issue, I used that #Dell #laptop for a solid five years. Solid 2019 era business-class machine with decent specs. It ran so well with #Debian and I thought it was pretty snappy. And then I bought this #ThinkPad P16s Gen4....
It's such an insane multi-generational leap that it's hard to believe it's a *mobile* #CPU. 🤯
Debian hat die Abstimmung über die Zukunft KI-Gestützter Beiträge gestartet. Die Abstimmung läuft bis zum 28. August. Nur Debian-Entwickler können abstimmen.

Quoting this again because it extends to the recent happenings as well. You really shouldn't be caring too much about them.
The #Linux Foundation is way less relevant for the Linux desktop space than you might think. The "Linux" in its name is a little misleading, because while it does indeed support the development of the Linux kernel, it also oversees a bunch of other projects. It's not at all comparable to e.g. the #GNOME Foundation, #KDE e.v. or the #Debian project.
It's not run by the same kind of people, and does not have the same kind of goals. It does not concern itself with the ideology of the free software movement, or the "community" in the sense that you and I perceive that word.
It exists as a collaboration ground for corporations, and primarily serves the interests of those.
Linus Torvalds is an important figure for kernel development and the general existence of Linux, but he should not be treated as an authority on everything Linux- or software-adjacent because of that.
For example, it has very little to say what desktop environment he prefers, or if he uses LLMs to develop his personal projects. The world could do with less idolization.
#Debian has begun voting about contributions made with LLMs
https://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2026/08/msg00002.html
Finally installed Debian on my desktop PC. Most of my computers have integrated graphics, so this was my first time setting up nVidia drivers.
I know some distros have utilities or scripts that make this easier, but this was not a good experience.
Once it worked though, it worked really well.
The Debian project started in 1993 and celebrates its birthday on August 16th of each year: Debian Day. This year we'll have at least 19 gatherings in 3 continents; c u there! #Debian #Debian33years #DebianDay #DebianDay2026
We know that many of you are already waiting for the Open Beta of TUXEDO OS based on Debian Testing. We will officially announce the release at the FrOSCon 2026 Linux conference.
debian-testing-amd64-netinst.iso is now 946MB. I remember when this was the one I used to grab because I was on a low-bandwidth connection.
You can *definitely* fit an entire distro in 946MB.

I recently discovered a command injection vulnerability (CWE-78) from Info-ZIP (zip). Advisory: https://sintonen.fi/advisories/infozip-test-option-command-injection.txt
The fix is now available in #Debian as DSA 6439-1: https://lists.debian.org/debian-security-announce/2026/msg00350.html
Other platforms shipping zip command should also pick up the patch: https://sources.debian.org/data/main/z/zip/3.0-16/debian/patches/fix-command-injection.patch
NOTE: macOS included zip command is not affected.
About LLM, AI companies, the environment, the climate crisis.

Debian discussion to ban LLM, https://www.debian.org/vote/2026/vote_002.
Undeniable arguments, with sources!
> It is our belief that widespread LLM usage comes from the "move fast, and break things" attitude that, while common in many parts of this industry, is contrary to what makes Debian Debian, and is inappropriate for Debian contributors. (1/3)

It's been a while I refreshed my pinned #introduction toot, and I figured today will be a fitting day to write a new one.
Hi! Despite the avatar, I'm not a furry
, I'm a boring cishet white dude. Despite my privileged status, I might be considered a "terrorist"
in some weird jurisdictions, and some companies
will consider me a "malicious actor", because I built myself a crawler defense system that serves them an infinite maze of garbage. To them, I say: fuck you. I'm a Vengeful Mouse.
I also have the privilege of being able to admire the human body in all shapes and forms, even such "grotesque" things as a female presenting nipple (like this one:
, not to be confused with the
, an entirely different and totally not grotesque thing). I wish this was the norm, rather than a privilege.
I'm a serial drive-by contributor, I have my fingerprints all over the internet. I have code in #QMK, #Kaleidoscope, and #Chrysalis, but I contributed to #Forgejo, #niri, and a whole lot of other things too. I find great joy in playing with new things, and submitting patches or other contributions. I used to be a #Debian developer, I've put #Hy in production, and lately I've been building #NixOS configurations not only as a literate #OrgMode document, with with #OrgRoam. I am extremely normal and neurotypical.
Apart from these very normal things, I use #NixOS to boot into #Emacs, which is the real operating system I use, like a very sane, completely neurotypical person would. I also tend to live-toot (very verbosely) all kinds of shenanigans I'm up to, because I always forget I have a blog.
While I do wrangle code for a living in a variety of languages (in whatever language necessary, I'm a generalist! But if I can choose, I turn to #Rust, although #Lisp languages are also very dear to me), if it were up to me, I'd much prefer wrangling other kinds of words
than programming language symbols. Sadly, we're not living in a world that makes possible, so I had no choice but become a #luddite and so can you.
But I'm not all about tech
! I'm also Dad to wonderful Twins, and Husband to my Wife, who not only puts up with my crazy, but gently
fans the flames too. I may occassionally toot about #parenting, too.
I may or may not have an unhealthy addiction to footnotes
.
Nope, I'm not in denial stage, I do not work in infosec. ↩︎
I'm anti-fascist. ↩︎
Short stories like this toot, or The Tragedy of Byr (which might need an explanation to really understand what's going on). ↩︎
I wish I could leave tech, really. ↩︎
Where "gently" is either an eyeroll and more wood thrown onto the campfire, or straight up lighting up the neighbourhood, figuratively speaking. ↩︎
...if you haven't noticed yet... ↩︎
