vit.am is a Fediverse instance that uses the ActivityPub protocol. In other words, users at this host can communicate with people that use software like Mastodon, Pleroma, Friendica, etc. all around the world.
This server runs the snac software and there is no automatic sign-up process.
Honored to be one of ten maintainers in the first @sovtechfund standards cohort.
I'll be representing #ActivityPub and the #fediverse at the w3c, bringing eight years of running Pixelfed and Loops at scale into the room where the spec gets written.

Thinking about a new domain+project...
Anyone have the TL;DR; on self hosted fediverse software?
Mastodon vs Snac vs Pleroma vs ?
I'm looking for something that is super low maintenance and lightweight / easy on resources but as full featured as practical within those constraints.
Something easy to tune re: post lengths and media types would be cool too. A "text first" platform is desired.
I've run Mastodon in the past and it's like fishing with nukes for this use case.
What's out there?

Tips: If your site exposes itself on the fediverse as a Mastodon account, this new feature brings newsletters for free to your audience. Pretty nice!
New in Mastodon 4.6: Newsletters 📬
Mastodon servers now support email newsletters, which allow people without a social web account to subscribe to your posts via email. This feature is opt-in at the server level.
We're building Mastodon for people and institutions that want independence from corporate-controlled social networks, so they can reach their audience directly wherever those people are.

Hello to the fediverse !
If you are admin of a Mastodon instance, you should check if IP from the bloc 43.160.0.0/12 (precisely IPs in the ranges 43.172.194 to 198 and 43.173.173 to 194)
are asking for A LOT of pages and consuming a lot of CPU / Bandwidth.
It's a malicious bot that harvest the fediverse by tags, feel free to bloc it ;)

Ok, I'm testing something cool.
A blend of #snac, #Mastodon, #honk, #GoToSocial...and more.
This is running on a Raspberry PI Zero W, powered by NetBSD. The same that is powering my own smart thermostat. And it's quick.
I'll use this account and try to "stress" it.
Own your data. Always own your data!
The arbitrary limits in #Mastodon are a little infuriating.
And I really want to like Mastodon. It was my first experience on the #fediverse, and I actually like the UI/UX, for the most part.
"What do you want to do?"
The new https://fediverse.info will be a powerful onboarding resource, and is shipping later this week!
Two things you can see here... It's pretty hot! That's why I stayed home and implemented a missing feature into snac. That's what you can also see - it finally sends push notifications to devices! In this case, we can see notifications coming from #MastoBlaster App for iPhone.
What we can also see, it's still a bit faulty and not the expected content, but a first success here at least ;) I'll make some further adjustments when there's time and get in touch with @grunfink@comam.es to check if we can get this upstream. Thanks to @stefano@bsd.cafe for testing with me :)

#Lazyweb When I want to spin up my own #Fediverse instance that supports #Markdown when composing a post and that can handle my significant amount of followers with a seamless migration from my current #Mastodon instance, which #ActivityPub Implementation would you use? Ideally it should be a simple rootless container setup that JustWorks™ with podman. Perfection would be a single, self-contained container without the need to spin up several ones for databases or other stuff.
I love that on the regular internet, you can be like "I need to find out what part this is on my 2025 car" and all the results you get back are for car rentals, people trying to sell you a car, trying to buy your car, or AI slop videos explaining to you what a car is in the least intelligible way possible.
But... in the #Fediverse you can be like "anybody know the correct wiring layout and voltages for a 1974 "Passion-o-Meter" novelty Love Tester from Hanlon Amusements in Fairbanks, Alabama? I found one while doing recreational free diving in a cave system in Peru and I'm trying to put it back together again" and not only does NOBODY question any part of the insane statement made, but three people who happen to specialize in that exact sort of thing immediately emerge from the woodwork like the reverse of Homer Simpson going into the hedge.
I've been on the fence about hosting my own #fediverse account for a while now, mainly because of the insane hardware requirements.
I've considered pleroma/akkoma for a while, but i don't know the first thing about elixir and their docs are not the most clear. I've been really tempted by #GoToSocial, but #snac's easy install & general simplicity made me take the plunge.
